Economical Driving and Maintenance

Chapter 4 · Manual page 204

Environmental Protection Your vehicle has been designed with the latest technology in order to minimise hazards to the environment. Economical Driving The way in which you drive your car has a significant bearing on the life span of the car, as well as the electricity consumption. Drive Smoothly Traveling at a suitable constant speed is more efficient than frequently braking and accelerating. Avoid making hard acceleration, sudden take-offs and harsh/emergency braking. Steady acceleration or deceleration uses considerably less energy than rapid acceleration or emergency braking, and minimizes the wear to mechanical components. Avoid Driving at Maximum Speed Both electricity consumption and noise levels increase significantly at high speeds. Drive Foreseeingly Avoid roads with traffic congestion or traffic jams. Predict road congestion as early as possible and keep enough distance from the car in front when driving and slow down in time. Avoid hard braking applications when not necessary, this will cause premature wear on braking components. Proper Use of Auxiliary Electrical Equipment in Car Although it is essential to maintain a comfortable interior environment, the use of interior auxiliary electrical equipment will increase electricity consumption. Check Tyre Pressures Regularly Over or under-inflated tyres wear out more rapidly and also have a detrimental effect on the car’s handling characteristics. Underinflated tyres increase the rolling resistance of the car, which in turn increases electricity consumption. Do Not Carry Unnecessary Loads The accessories’ weight and unnecessary loads waste electricity, especially in stop/start conditions where the car is frequently required to set off from stationary. Avoid dried dirt/mud sticking to the vehicle chassis, which not only will reduce body weight, but also can prevent body corrosion. Maintain Correct Four-Wheel Alignment Avoid collisions with the kerb and reduce speed on uneven road surfaces. Incorrect four-wheel alignment will not only cause premature tyre wear, but also increase power load and electricity consumption.
